Pet boarding prices: what is included in the rate?

Two daily rates are not comparable when one includes food, exercise and medicine while the other adds supplements. The useful figure is the total cost of a specific stay, accompanied by an exact description of what the animal will receive.

Give every establishment the same scenario
Request a price for identical dates, arrival and collection times, species, animal numbers and needs. State size, food, medicine, behaviour and transport requirements. Ask whether the unit is a calendar day, night or 24-hour period and how arrival and departure are counted. Without that foundation, a lower-looking rate may produce a higher final cost.
What to confirm in the base rate
- The allocated accommodation and type of sleeping area.
- Meals, food supplied and whether the normal diet can be brought.
- Exercise, outings, play or enrichment actually included.
- Supervision, overnight checks and daily records.
- Cleaning, bedding, bowls and necessary heating or cooling.
- Basic updates and the communication method.
Do not assume an essential need is included because it appears obvious. Ask the quote to describe the service, frequency and any limit.
Supplements that can change the comparison
Establishments may charge differently for medicine, individual attention, extra walks, public holidays, out-of-hours arrival, collection, grooming, bathing, special food, webcams or upgraded rooms. A supplement is not automatically unreasonable; the problem is discovering it after meaningful comparison is no longer possible.
Deposits, cancellation and date changes
Ask what secures the booking, when the balance is due, what is refundable and what happens after early collection. Confirm late-collection charges and the process for extending a stay after a cancelled journey or emergency. Read the terms before paying and retain the accepted quote.
Compare value rather than total alone
Separate essential needs from attractive extras. If a dog needs individual exercise or a cat needs a unit away from dogs, compare only options able to provide it. Then consider distance, communication and cost. A pool or webcam cannot offset inadequate supervision; a simple facility is not a bargain when every necessary element is added later.
A useful quote template
- Stay: dates, times and chargeable nights.
- Mandatory rate: accommodation and unavoidable charges.
- Necessary care: diet, medicine, exercise and individual support.
- Selected options: transport, bathing, camera access or other extras.
- Total: taxes and fees, deposit and outstanding balance.
- Scenarios: cancellation, delay, veterinary visit or extension.
Price transparency and this guide's limits
Pricing law varies by jurisdiction. In the UK, CMA guidance says prices must be clear and mandatory charges included in the total; do not assume that legal framework applies elsewhere. Wherever the stay takes place, a written total supports meaningful comparison. AnimaliaHotels neither sets nor verifies rates, so confirm the price directly.
Final questions before accepting the quote
What if the establishment cannot calculate the total?
Ask which component depends on a later decision, how it will be calculated and what a reasonable maximum scenario is. A veterinary consultation may be impossible to price in advance, but transport, consent and payment procedure can still be explained. If planned services have neither a price nor a calculation rule, the comparison remains incomplete.
Is a package better value?
Only when the animal will use what it includes. Compare the package with the same stay purchased by component and check whether an unsuitable service can be removed. A “premium” label does not describe frequency, duration or responsibility; request those details.
