Location matters for logistics and emergency response. A nearby park, beach or station does not prove that animals will use it. Ask what the establishment actually uses and how it transports an animal during an emergency.
Calculate the complete journey
Consider distance, traffic, roads, arrival times and an alternative person who could collect your pet. A more distant establishment may be appropriate when it meets an essential need; a nearby one can make preliminary visits and a rapid response easier.
Check veterinary arrangements

Not always. A short distance can simplify visits and collection, but it must be weighed against care quality and suitability for the animal. Check the actual journey at handover time rather than relying on straight-line distance.
What plan is needed if a road closes or the journey is delayed?
Confirm phone numbers, arrival flexibility, out-of-hours collection and an authorised alternative person. In places exposed to snow, flooding, heat or other disruption, ask how supplies, temperature, staffing and veterinary access are maintained.
Does proximity to an airport or station matter?
